What is the coffee capital of Australia? Does Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane serve the most and best coffee?
I love coffee. For me, it's more than a drink. It's a ritual. A time to pause, reflect and connect with people. I've built a career out of talking about coffee for the past 30 years and have been lucky enough to visit some amazing places as a result.
But there is one question that always comes up: what is the coffee capital of Australia?
It's usually a multiple-choice question: Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane?
I'm often asked if Melbourne really is the coffee capital of Australia or just has an undeserved reputation based on hype and legend.
The answer is probably yes - to both questions. But, as my barista friends would say, it's "all good". Reputation isn't reality, but it can drive reality. Melbourne's reputation for great coffee (even when it wasn't) attracted the best talent which in turn drove standards up until they were worthy of the reputation.
The next time you find yourself in Australia, visiting one of its three largest cities, and you have a hankering for a cup of coffee, consider this. Which city serves the best coffee? Is it Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane?
But that isn't the only question. How do these three cities compare to each other for their overall love of coffee? What about the most expensive coffee served? What about the cheapest? And which city serves the most cups of coffee per day per person?
To answer these questions I turned to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services that was published in May last year. The data is based on information gathered via surveys conducted by the ABS in January 2011.
