What is coffee house culture?

Coffee houses are institutions where people go to drink coffee and discuss current events. The first coffee house in Vienna opened in 1788, but the idea did not catch on immediately. The first coffee house to become popular with Viennese society was the Cafe Central, which opened its doors in 1876.

The cafe was the place to be seen in fin-de-siecle Vienna. Intellectuals, journalists and artists would sit for hours discussing the great issues of the day. Among them were men such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud and Gustav Klimt.

Coffee houses were also important for writers at this time. The first serialized novels were published in newspapers, and writers would read their work out loud at coffee houses to give it an audience.

What is coffee house culture? I mean, Starbucks and other chains have created the appearance of a cultural space, but what is it really?

It's not random. There's no doubt that much of the appeal of coffee houses is that they create a social space that hasn't existed for most people in the U.S. since the early 20th century: public space that isn't attached to a specific social group and isn't dominated by any particular activity. But why coffee houses?

My theory is that coffee culture is like Unix culture: something created by nerds to make themselves happy, but then taken over by marketing people, who proceeded to ruin it. The original coffee house culture was geek culture, which eventually had its revenge when it leached caffeine out of the hands of ordinary mortals and appropriated it as one more tool for making itself more productive.

Another Quotable Coffee Quote: "Our people work more, earn more, spend more. Here they work less, gain less, and spend less, but they are happy! That's what I think. Also, I haven't seen people here drink much, unlike Kerala, where it's almost like bread and coffee for them!" Mammootty
