It's widely believed that coffee affects mood. Does it?

In the short term, yes. Caffeine is a stimulant, and in high doses it can make people jittery, interrupt their sleep, raise their heart rate and blood pressure, and generally mess with their minds. But in moderation, the effects of coffee on mood appear to be neutral or even positive.

People who drink coffee regularly seem to have lower rates of depression and suicide than those who don't. And one study found that men who drink coffee regularly are less likely to commit suicide.

A review of 20 studies found an inverse association between regular coffee consumption and depression, with risk decreasing as consumption increases, and a meta-analysis of 36 studies found similar results.

Many people are concerned about the effect of caffeine on their mood and mental state. In 2009, a group of psychologists from the Netherlands released a study on the effects of coffee on alertness, calmness, and contentedness. The subjects of this study were split into two groups: those who had drunk coffee within the past hour and those who hadn’t. The group that had consumed coffee reported feeling more alert, calm, and content than those who had not consumed coffee in the past hour.

Does this study mean that drinking coffee makes you feel good? Not necessarily. There are a few reasons why this study gives us very little information about how coffee affects our mental state.

First of all, there is no control group that did not drink any caffeine at all. While it may be true that those who drank coffee were in a better state of mind than those who did not drink coffee, it’s possible that there was another factor causing these differences in mood. For example, maybe people who drink coffee are more likely to go outside or to exercise before taking this test. This would also explain why they felt more alert.

Another Quotable Coffee Quote: "Be honest: if your pitch is 90 minutes and you only have 60 set aside for a business lunch or a cup of coffee, there is no way that you can give an honest representation of your company or products. You're lying to yourself and wasting your own time as well as that of your prospect or partner." Michael Gerber
